Codetel allocates US$300 million for infrastructure spending

The Dominican Republic’s telecoms incumbent Codetel/Claro Dominicana – a subsidary of America Movil  – plans to invest US$300 million  this year on the development of the country’s 3G network, national deployment of a fiber optic infrastructure and the strengthening of internet protocol (IP) technology.

The operator has reportedly invested more than US$2 billion since 2000, including US$250 million last year alone, specifically on technology investments and social projects such as the broadband rural connectivity project.

Viva enables mobile subscribers in Dominican Republic to tweet with their voice

The solution has been sourced from Kirusa, the world’s leading vendor of Voice SMS and a leading developer of mobile value added services.

With this launch, Viva DR mobile subscribers can update their status on Twitter through voice tweets. This provides a very convenient alternative to texting. The service is available to all Viva DR GSM and CDMA subscribers across Dominican Republic, whatever the mobile handset model is, they do not need a smart phone.
