Megacable to launch mobile service with Telefonica

leave a comment »

Mexican cable operator Megacable Comunicaciones plans to launch mobile phone services using Telefonica’s network.

The mobile service launch is scheduled for the end of the third quarter, according to Enrique Yamuni Robles, Megacable CEO. The announcement was made at the Reuters Latin American Investment Summit.

According to Yamuni, Megacable is finalizing a deal to acquire airtime from Telefonica. Megacable Comunicaciones will offer service bundles combining mobile phones that use Telefonica’s network with its own TV, internet and fixed-line services. The operator plans to charge prices similar to Telefonica’s.

“We’ll handle billing, promotions and marketing. We’ll be taking the risk on late payments,” Yamuni said.

Megacable Comunicaciones targets 100,000 new mobile phone subscribers in the first year following the launch of its mobile service. “It is an additional option that we can offer the customer. It is not a business that will dramatically lift our cash flow or operating profit,” added Yamuni.

Megacable withdraws from dark fibre spectrum tender

leave a comment »

Mexican cable operator Megacable Comunicaciones has decided to withdraw from the license tender for the use, benefit and exploitation of radio spectrum in the 1710-1770 / 2110-2170 MHz frequency band.

According to Enrique Yamuni Robles, Megacable Director General, the operator has the technical, legal and financial means to operate these frequencies. However, the analysis regarding the size of this business and its financial viability led Megacable to decide the withdrawal from the bidding process.

Megacable Comunicaciones plans to continue exploring the MVNO model in order to offer mobile telephony services in the short-term.

Two bidders interested in Mexican dark fibre spectrum tender

leave a comment »

The tender for the Federal Electricity Commission’s dark fibre spectrum has attracted two bidders. At end-March, Televisa, Telefonica and Megacable Comunicaciones set up a joint venture to place a joint bid for dark fibre spectrum in Mexico.

According to the Mexican Ministry of Communications and Transport (SCT), Iusacell  has also submitted the necessary documentation to join the tender.

The period for presentation and reception of documents expired on 5 April. The Mexican Ministry of Communications and Transport (SCT) is auctioning the unused parts of state power company CFE’s fibre-optic network. CFE thus opens its dark fibre network, and will rent unused parts of its fibre-optic network to alternative operators.

The tender winner is expected to be announced on 9 June.

leave a comment »

Mexican triple play provider Megacable is looking at launching a mobile telephony service in a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) format, local press reported the company as saying during a conference call with investors. “

In quadruple play we are still looking at the MVNO model with one of the existing operators… you may see something related to that in the near future, in the very, very near future,” said Megacable’s Chief Operating Officer, Raymundo Fernández.

Fernandez said Megacable could bid for mobile telephone spectrum expected to be offered by the government. “We are also looking at the frequency auctions,” he said. “We are in the industry, so the quadruple play is something that we see in the near future
